Troubleshooting

Printer Stops Printing Unexpectedly

An error has occurred

If the printer stops printing unexpectedly, try the solutions listed for the corresponding problem.

An error has occurred

Many common printer problems can be identified by the lights on your printer's control panel.

If your printer stops working, use the following table to diagnose the problem, then follow the recommended corrective measures.

The control panel has the lights shown on the chart below.

First, check the printer status roughly, using the four lights with names.

Next, check the detailed information, using the seven lights in the printer figure, on the left of the control panel.

Ink Out

Ink low

An ink cartridge is nearly empty.

Check which color of ink is detected, using the printer figure on the left of the control panel. Obtain a replacement ink cartridge.

An ink cartridge is empty or not installed.

Check which color of ink is detected, using the printer figure on the left of the control panel. Replace the ink cartridge with a new one.

Paper Out

Paper jam

Paper has jammed in the printer.

See Clearing Paper Jams.

Printer cover is open

The printer cover is open.

Close the printer cover.

Paper out (paper tray)

No paper is loaded in the paper tray.

Load a stack of paper into the paper tray installed in the printer.

Paper Out

Paper out (paper tray)

No paper was loaded in the paper tray when print job was sent.

Load a stack of paper into the paper tray installed in the printer.
If you want to use another paper source, change the paper source setting in the printer driver.

Paper loading failure (paper tray)

Paper is not loaded correctly in the paper tray.

Load the paper while referring to Loading paper into paper tray in the printer.

No paper tray (paper tray)

The paper tray is not installed or not installed properly in the printer.

Install the paper tray while referring to "Installing the paper tray" in the Setup Guide.

Paper out (lower paper tray)

No paper is loaded in the lower paper tray.

Load a stack of paper into the lower paper tray installed in the optional Lower Paper Cassette.

Paper out (lower paper tray)

No paper was loaded in the lower paper tray when print job was sent.

Load a stack of paper into the lower paper tray installed in the optional Lower Paper Cassette.
If you want to use another paper source, change the paper source setting in the printer driver.

Paper loading failure (lower paper tray)

Paper is not loaded correctly in the lower paper tray.

Load the paper while referring to Loading paper into the lower paper tray in the optional Lower Paper Cassette.

No paper tray (lower paper tray)

The lower paper tray is not installed or not installed properly in the optional Lower Paper Cassette.

Install the paper tray while referring to "Installing the paper tray" in the Setup Guide.

Paper Size/Type

Paper size or type error (auto select)

The paper size/type setting in the printer does not match the setting in the printer driver, when you select Auto Select for the paper source.

Check the paper size/type settings in both the printer (paper size lever/media type lever) and the printer driver.
Correct the setting, as necessary.

Paper size/type error (paper tray)

The paper size/type setting in the printer does not match the setting in the printer driver, when you select Paper Tray for the paper source.

Check the paper size/type settings in both the printer (paper size lever/media type lever ) and the printer driver.
Correct the setting, as necessary.

Paper Size/Type

Paper size/type error (lower paper tray)

The paper size/type setting in the printer does not match the setting in the printer driver, when you select Paper Tray [Lower] for the paper source.

Check the paper size/type settings in both the printer (paper size lever/media type lever) and the printer driver.
Correct the setting, as necessary.

Maintenance by the dealer is required before long.

Turn off the printer and contact your dealer.

Print head hot error

The print head is too hot.

Turn off the printer and turn it back on. Be sure to print the nozzle check pattern. If the nozzle check pattern is printed wrong, clean the print head. See Cleaning the Printer.

Unknown printer error (All lights are flashing.)

Unknown error has occurred.

Turn off the printer. Check for and remove any foreign objects or pieces of paper from inside the printer. Then, turn it back on. If the error indicator does not change, turn off the printer and contact your dealer.
