Stapling and Stacking

Stapling the output paper
Using the Finisher Stapler

Stapling the output paper

To staple the output paper, you need to install the optional Finisher Stapler. When using the Finisher Stapler, you can make settings for Orientation, Binding, Staple, and Staple Position in the printer driver's Layout menu or SelecType Printing menu.

Caution:
  • The output trays of the Finisher Stapler move up and down. Be sure there is enough space above and below the trays, and avoid placing items on the floor beneath the trays.
  • Pushing on the tray side of the Finisher Stapler, when you are moving it, may cause it to tip over.

Note:
The Finisher Stapler cannot be installed at the same time as the Multibin Unit. However, the Large Capacity Paper Unit must be installed when attaching the optional Finisher Stapler.

Using the Finisher Stapler

This optional Finisher Stapler is a 3-bin stacker with staple function and can hold up to 1800 sheets of paper. The capacity of the three bins is up to 670 sheets each for A4 size paper and up to 300 sheets for A3 size paper.

The supported paper sizes and the maximum capacity for each bin depend on whether the output is stapled or unstapled.

Note:
  • The Finisher Stapler cannot be used in the mailbox, sorter and multiple sorter modes.
  • Government Letter (8.5 x 10.5"), International B5, postcards, envelopes and non-standard size paper cannot be output to the Finisher Stapler.

Using the staple feature

The staple mode enables you to staple together up to 50 sheets. The orientation of the output page is sometimes rotated depending on the Paper Size, Orientation, Binding, and other relevant settings.

Note:
  • Paper of differing sizes cannot be stapled together. Paper of the same size but different orientation can be stapled.
  • To prevent paper jams, do not open the Finisher Stapler cover before the paper comes out.
  • Do not use thick paper that may cause paper jams.

Stapling position

Whether or not stapling is possible depends on the Paper Size, Orientation and Binding settings. When you select Single for the Staple setting in the printer driver or SelecType Printing menu, the staple may be inserted as shown below at an angle depending on the Paper Size and other relevant settings.

How to use the unload button

When you press the unload button during output to the Finisher Stapler, the batch of the print job in progress does not stop until it is finished. When the staple function is in use, the batch of the print job in progress finishes after stapling is completed. The second tray then moves to the paper output position of the printer (cover H)

Pushing the unload button again lowers the Finisher Stapler tray to its lowest position. However, if the unload button is not pushed for one minute after printing stops, the Finisher Stapler automatically lowers itself one level. If the Finisher Stapler encounters resistance while it is moving it will stop, but care should be taken when standing near the output trays.

Caution:
Keep the area around the output trays of the Finisher Stapler clear to prevent objects from obstructing the motion of the output trays. And, take care that the Finisher Stapler does not bump anything when it moves.

When the unload button is pressed again or the printer is left undisturbed all three trays of the Finisher Stapler automatically return, one minute after the button was first pushed, to their original position or remain at the lowest position, and the LED lights turn off.

When all three trays become full

When all three trays become full, the message "Finisher Stapler 3 Full" appears on the LCD panel and printing stops.

Output to Face-down Tray

Paper is output to the face-down tray if all three trays become full when Stacker in the Setup Menu is set to +Face-down during output without stapling.

If stapling is on and Stacker is set to No Face-dwn, the message "Finisher 3 Full" appears on the LCD panel and paper is not output to the face down tray even if the bins become full.

Can't Adjust Finisher Tray

If something interferes with bin movement, the message "Can't Adjust Finisher Tray" may appear on the LCD panel. Remove the cause of interference and turn the power back on.

Offset Stacking

When you set Offset Stacking to On in the SelecType Printing menu or the printer driver's setting, each print job is output by alternating their positions in the face-down tray. When you set +face-down in the SelecType or printer driver and all trays become full, paper output switches to the face-down tray, the Offset Stacking mode is turned off, and all paper is output to the center of the face-down tray.
