Troubleshooting

Paper Feed or Paper Jam Problems Occur Frequently

Try one or more of these solutions:

Thumb through a stack of paper and align the edges before loading.

Check the paper package and see Paper Tray and Loading Capacity by Media Type for the amount of paper you can load at once in the paper tray.

Make sure the paper tray cover is attached to the paper tray correctly.

Make sure the printable surface is face-up.

Make sure the paper is not folded or wrinkled.

Make sure printing occurs within the operational temperature range.

Make sure the paper is not damp.

Make sure the paper is not too thick or too thin. See Paper.

Make sure no foreign objects are inside the printer.

For Windows, check the Media Type setting in the Main menu and media type lever positions on the paper tray. Make sure it is correct for the paper you are using.

For Macintosh, check the Media Type setting in the Print dialog box. Make sure it is correct for the paper you are using.

Make sure that the platen gap setting matches your paper. You can change the platen gap by using the special power-on function. See Platen gap adjustment for the manual feed slots.

Make sure that the paper guide roller in the paper tray is set properly. Read the following according to the condition.

If multiple sheets are fed simultaneously, make sure the paper guide roller is on the stack of paper properly. See Loading paper into paper tray in the printer.

If no sheet is fed the edge of the sheet turns up, fix the paper guide roller as shown below so that it does not operate.

Note:

When plain paper is fed into the printer, the edges of the paper may curl up.

You may not be able to feed the last sheet in the bottom of the paper tray when feeding plain paper. This is because the last sheet in the paper tray serves as a support sheet to feed the other sheets properly.

If you are printing on Archival Matte Paper or Professional Glossy Paper, use the cleaning sheet packed with the media package. For information on how to use the cleaning sheet, see the instruction sheet in the media package.
